Birth Pangs of Global Justice

Injustice. Inequality. Two characteristics that seem to be the hallmarks of our twisted age. In a remarkably short period, Western culture seems to have gone from a relatively peaceful sense of social tranquility to upheaval and pandemonium.  Do you sense that something’s going to break if you see any more unnecessary pain, injustice, inhumanity and malcontent? Do you feel the weight? Does it seem too much to fathom, let alone bear?

Over 2,000 years ago, the birth pangs of the present were predicted, and along with the foretelling came additional words—words of comfort. Jesus clearly indicated that in the midst of this present storm—which was no surprise to Him—we were to take heart. In the darkness of our present condition, there is hope. Not just a glimmer of it, either. But a burgeoning, vast expanse—a bright vista full of promise and insurmountable anticipation seated secure upon an eternal foundation.

He who is Truth embodied has declared it is so. In Christ we have a promise that the last will be first, and the self-obsessed will be exposed and laid barren. In Christ we have assurance that the untold misery that affronts our senses daily is going to cease. In one moment—a shakedown that separates wheat from chaff, genuine from fake, true from false.

In the midst of the storm, fear not. Take hope and faint not.

PRAYER

Father, these days seem like none other we have known. Although there is a familiarity bred by our reading and study of Scripture, nevertheless each new day, each passing news cycle,  seems foreign to our senses and most certainly to the world many of us have known and lived in for most of our lives.

We cannot walk by sight through these times. We cannot anticipate familiar institutions and landmarks built by our predecessors for their times. We must look beyond to the Rock immovable.

We beseech You to strengthen and encourage our resolve to reach out to Jesus alone, as did Peter in his storm. We ask You to write upon our spirits the stories of Daniel in the lions’ den, the three Hebrew children in the furnace, the apostles in their trials.

We ask that our faith might have a contagious quality that compels our friends, foes and neighbours to enquire—“What gives you this calm in this storm?” And in their asking, may Your Spirit give us the specific word that will answer and plant salvation faith in their hearts as well.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Matthew 5:3-12— “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 10:38-39— “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

Matthew 8:23-26—“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”

Matthew 10:21,22—“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

1 John 4:18—“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

 

TRANSFORMING CANADA TOGETHER

Twice a week during the month of July we encourage you to watch for stories that will be shared on paoc.org and through our Mission Canada social media feeds. Our nation has never experienced times like we are journeying through right now.  And as pastors, leaders and people of faith, we do not journey alone. God goes before us. He is all around us. He is giving wisdom and creativity to those who ask. He is making a way where we didn’t see it possible. And He has not stopped providing for our needs.  As the Church, we are seeing God work in great ways to call people unto Himself. You will be encouraged as you hear what God is doing and how He is using those in our PAOC family to bring the good news of Jesus to fellow Canadians—those who need to know the Giver of peace, protection, comfort and care, especially in these uncertain days.  The Church is very much alive and active, and God reigns supreme!

Father God: Our Invitation to Intimacy

On June 21, Father’s Day will be celebrated by most families in the Western world. It’s a time when many set aside at least a few hours (and dollars) to show appreciation for the first and primary male leader in their lives. It’s a good time to reflect and offer gratitude and to acknowledge the blessing of having this source of guidance and love. Although it’s regrettable that some of us are unable to tap into memories or the living reality of a positive relationship with a biological father, for many, the symbolism and heritage is spiritually and emotionally meaningful. Father God, however, avails Himself for all.

It may come as a surprise to many Christians that the sense of intimacy evoked by this aspect of the Godhead (i.e. God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) was not always so pronounced. The Old Testament tradition was different. In fact, any intimation that God could be referred to as “Father” is all but missing in that part of the traditional (monotheistic) position that there is only one God. God was more often thought of as leader or judge. However, when we arrive at the New Testament, there is an explosion of intimacy and the primary source for this revelation is Jesus Himself. And this is profound indeed.

There’s no reason to believe that people were a whole lot different in small communities like Nazareth in Jesus’ day than they are in ours today. Almost without a doubt, Jesus would have become aware of the rumours. His mother was a virgin? Visited by an angel? Joseph? You know how people are. Yet, the full-on revelation via Jesus was centred on the truth that God is His Father. Powerful.

Beyond that revelation is the unfathomable wonder that is our invitation to adoption. Jesus welcomes us to this family as brothers and sisters. Wow. We have an awesome invitation to connection—to our Eternal Father on this Father’s Day. Whether or not we grew up with the strong, guiding presence of our natural father, we have solid assurance—that of being invited into the family of our Eternal Father.

PRAYER

Dear Father, we offer prayerful tokens of acknowledgement and gratitude. The implications of Christ’s revelation are immense. Let our recognition and repentance be as incense before Your throne.

In this darkness of our current age help us to understand and lay hold of Your gift and the promise that has been delivered by Your Son, our Saviour. Help us to realize that it’s not only the economy that is suffering and needs restoration. Rather, it’s our relationship with You. Continue to guide us through the challenges of this world by Your guiding light of hope and truth, and through the gentle example of our Saviour.

Grant us focused attention and encouragement to wear our assurance with grace and love as we continue to live out our daily lives. As we engage with the lost, may our own repentance and the hope we carry speak humility and truth to the masses in such a way as to brightly reflect the reality of your kingdom. May their eyes, hearts and understanding be awakened and lead many to the path of salvation.

Amen.

MAY 2020

GOD’S SPIRIT: HELPER IN YOUR WORLD

Help!  This is a plea that we are seeing with increased frequency and urgency these days. In the midst of difficulty, whether it be overwhelming tasks in our day-to-day employment or a challenge thrown at us as part of human existence, we are apt to need help. And lots of it.

Jesus knew that His followers would need help when He told them that upon His departure, He would send a Helper. Like many Christians today, they may have been puzzled by that statement. Who will help us?

Jesus, of course was referring to the Holy Spirit. Our Helper.

Our Christian life dips back and forth between the darkness of this world and the bright promise of God’s kingdom. The Holy Spirit is our Helper who provides access to God’s eternal power, presence, knowledge and unchanging nature.

For the first-century disciples, this promised Helper remained somewhat of a mystery. Their anticipation of Jesus’ promised gift would require a period of unified waiting. A time of prayer and patience. We know this because the scriptures inform us that when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). It was then that they saw what appeared to be tongues of fire that separated and then came to rest on each of them. It was at that moment that they met the Helper, the Holy Spirit.

On May 31st we celebrate that event on Pentecost Sunday. As a global Pentecostal family, we can be reminded of how we came this far and anticipate and engage with fresh ways the Spirit is working in our world (The Calgary Call), especially in this challenging new season. We have an opportunity to revisit the idea of living “naturally supernatural,” inviting the fullness of the Spirit into our lives again and inviting others to do the same.

When we are feeling overwhelmed, a simple whisper for help brings the Helper. Let this be your portion in these trying days.

THE CALGARY CALL:

We call the global Pentecostal family to experience the fullness of the Spirit. We must be Pentecostal in both theology and practice, living in ways that are naturally supernatural. Therefore, we call church leaders to model Spirit-filled living and equip believers to experience His power and presence.

PRAYER

Dear Father, we are so grateful for Your abiding presence and longing to help us in every detail of our lives. We find great comfort in the knowledge that You wish to guide us as we travel through the uncertainty of these times. When everything is in upheaval and unstable voices call out to us from near and far, we thank You for the confidence that comes from knowing that in You is grand stability, calm, assurance and help. Please help us not only to remember this, but to reflect that reality to a world that is in grave danger and needs to know You. Amen.

Jesus: Hope for Our World

One of the most prominent and constant realities of human existence is that of conflict. Nation against nation. Ideology against ideology. Brother against brother. Everybody is right in their own eyes, often in direct contradiction of divine law. On and on this battle rages, affecting everyone and everything. It continues even down to the molecular level. Today, we are fighting for our very lives with an unseen enemy—COVID-19, caused by the coronavirus, which has quickly evolved into a global pandemic. It is clear that something, or more accurately, someone, wants us dead.

None of this should surprise students of theology. In fact, this conflict originated shortly after the dawn of creation. Satan, the prince of darkness, the evil one, the father of lies, infiltrated the thinking of humanity’s first parents and lodged a seed of rebellion that has carried through to our current age.

Today, Christians continue in battle, assured by the hope given to us through Christ’s victory and His promises. Why? Because Jesus died at Calvary, thus satisfying the need for atonement by sacrifice. Simply stated, we have become one with God because His Son died on the cross and rose again on the third day. This hope endures.

Today, we continue in battle with the enemy of our souls—until Father God says “enough,” redeemed humanity is called home, and Satan is eternally vanquished.  As Christians, one of the greatest battlefields is that of our minds. We must defeat the devil and guard our thinking, for our sake and for the sake of the generations behind us. Embracing the timeless truths of God’s Word and applying them in current life situations is crucial to success for each generation.

Jesus: Alive in Our Homes

With a focus towards children aged 4 to 14, the PAOC is introducing “Making The Bible Come Alive” — a tool that has been specifically created to familiarize young minds with real-life stories of prominent Bible characters. It is our desire to help parents, grandparents and church leaders pass faith along, realizing that the devil is determined to undermine and bury our efforts beneath mountains of competing visual and mental distractions. Incorporating this powerful discipleship tool and trusting God’s Spirit to guide and assist us in our teaching will allow light to break through the darkness and give us victory.

PRAYER
Father God, we acknowledge with great reverence that You are sovereign and You have given us victory through Your Son. We recognize that Your great love gives us not only hope, but also peace. The sufferings of this present age are trifling compared to the indescribable glory that awaits. You have already won the battle and in faithfulness You have redeemed us from the rage and the plans of the Liar. Satan’s rage is evidence that he knows his time is near an end.

Father, we ask You to awaken the church to the knowledge that we have a Saviour and His name is Jesus. Give Your people hope and the boldness to make the most of every opportunity to share this hope with those who suffer in the blinding darkness of this age. Protect us, give us wisdom, and teach us how to live as we follow the guidance of healthcare professionals and the principles of Your living Word. We look forward to remembering not just the epic event of love recalled on Good Friday, but also the immeasurable hope that lives in us because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Amen.

MARCH 2020

A wonderful practice—once prominent in traditional Christianity—is the observance of Lent. Lent commenced on February 26, 2020 and continues until April 9. Excluding Sundays, it represents the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness. For devout believers it can be a time of prayer, fasting and reflection upon the Word. What a tremendous opportunity to bring the needs of the church and society to the throne of God. Let’s pray with confidence that God will prepare us for greater use in His great plans and purposes as we pursue Him more intentionally during the next few weeks. Let’s be especially attentive to include in our prayers a request for God’s intervention in the coronavirus global health emergency.

PRAYER
Father, I bring You praise and thanksgiving for the security of Your promises, the wonders of Your majesty and the opportunities to serve that You provide. Please help me to adopt Your intense longing for the salvation of humanity and to wear it as a visible robe of light wherever and whenever You take me into the world. Help me to discover the powerful truths of Your Word and the energizing authority of Your Spirit that come with contemplation, prayer and discipline. Help me to be attentive to a life of integrity and character and to be that person before You and humanity. Help me to work in concert with the divinely mandated programs that Your committed disciples are developing with Your gifts of creativity, love and insight as we confront and address the vast needs of our age.

FEBRUARY 2020

Desiring greater missional fruitfulness as a Pentecostal family, we long to connect more deeply with the Spirit, who in turn will empower us to continue reaching out in love to those around us. We hear His call to engage with the world in fresh ways with the truth of the gospel and loving expressions of His care. (See The Calgary Call.) We have a distinct sense of the urgency of this mission echoing from the heart of God. It is a call for the salvation of humanity—a call to which we are all invited to respond and participate.

PRAYER
Father, You have called. I have heard. I have heard the longing and sensed the urgency in your cry to restore all of humanity back to relationship with You. While I understand that this concerns my own spiritual welfare, I know that it doesn’t stop there. This call is for all people—individuals, families and entire communities. I pledge to know and trust the power of Your Spirit and the truth of Your Word that is so wonderfully revealed in the good news of Jesus. Help me, Lord, to reflect Your beauty and magnificence by living a just, merciful and humble life in obedience to You. Help me to love others as You love them and use me to introduce them to You so they, too, can be part of Your family.

JANUARY 2020

“It’s Time” – for missional fruitfulness; churches that are vital and multiply. In the light of our 2020 Initiative goals, we will evaluate our current missional integrity as we look forward to greater fruitfulness.
“It’s Time” – for leadership that is spiritually alive and marked by integrity. We are recommitting to being leaders of faithful character who leave a legacy of spiritual intimacy.
“It’s Time” – for truth-based ministries that make disciples. We are considering our refreshed Statement of Essential Truths as we recommit to knowing and communicating His truth that sets people free.
“It’s Time” – to send called persons to Canada and the world. We are reimagining our response as we send global and Mission Canada workers into current and future realities.
“It’s Time” – for the future, now! Engaging our shared challenge and commitment to make disciples and develop the leadership of children, youth and young adults.

Even so, let us resolve to live and pray in an attitude and posture of acknowledgement that “It’s Time!” These are the days— 2020 is the year—for missional living with theological integrity and Christ-like character with an eye to both the future and eternity!

PRAYER
It’s Time! Lord, help me to put You first in all I do in 2020. Give me an increased love for You and for Your Word. Help me give You praise each day, even before I bring my needs to You. Help me give You my life, every day, all day, and not just when it’s convenient for me. Help me to recognize You at work all around me and give me a willing spirit to partner with You to see Your kingdom expanded. I will do my very best to use the talents and abilities You have blessed me with for Your purposes and not my own selfish ways. Bless my efforts, as I give You my time, my talents and all that I treasure in this new year. I give You first place in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

JANUARY 2019

I will choose to follow Jesus.

When Jesus called His first disciples, they left everything to follow Him. He asks the same of us today—to be first in our lives. His desire is that we follow Him, and that as we do, we help others to follow Him, too. He desires us to be disciples who make disciples—followers who make other Christ-followers. But this can’t happen without intentionality. In the midst of so many distractions, it takes commitment to follow Jesus. And that commitment should not be out of a feeling of obligation, but out of a deep sense of love and desire for more of Him. It’s a step of obedience to do what He has requested of us … follow.  Together, in 2019, we are resolving to make Jesus a priority, asking Him to take us deeper in relationship with Him. Asking Him to strengthen our faith, and our love for Him. As He answers, we will see the fruitfulness in our relationships and in our ability to show other the treasures of the kingdom of God.

Ask for God to help you…

  • Put Him first in all you do.
  • Be obedient to the things He asks you to do.
  • Place your relationship with Jesus over the activity that you do for God.
  • Lead others to Jesus and see them discipled in His ways.

I will love in grace and truth.

We know that as we follow Christ, choosing to be counter-cultural, making choices that are different from people around us who may not have had exposure to God’s Word, we can be misunderstood or even accused of thinking we are “better” than others. Jesus did warn us that we could expect the same level of rejection that He faced if we follow Him (John 15:18-19). In our relationships with others, however, we are called to be salt and light; to “season” our environment (in a similar way that salt seasons and limits decay in raw meat) and to positively impact those we meet by our faith and example, pointing them to Christ (bringing “light” to dark or evil places). Jesus did both of these with the perfect balance of grace (patience, kindness, tact) and truth (an honest assessment of where things stood in relationship to what God the Father desired). Remembering God’s grace to us, which we don’t deserve, helps us to be patient with others who may still be on their own journey towards Christ’s forgiveness. It can help us to have the right balance of love, patience and truth in interacting and communicating with others.

  • That God will deepen our appreciation of how much we’ve been forgiven for.
  • That we will grow in love for those with whom we live, work or interact.
  • That we will be patient with others’ faults and forgive those who sin against us.
  • That we will be gracious in communicating God’s truths to others.

I will live according to God’s Word.

Jesus promised that anyone who truly wants to do God’s will would find out if His teaching was from God or merely His own (John 7:17). He also promised that He would reveal Himself to anyone who accepted His teaching and put it into practice (John 14:21). Intellectual agreement that Jesus is God’s Son, that He died on a cross, and that He forgives sins, are the first simple but powerful steps to living a life of faith. But that mental agreement must translate into a heart-felt understanding of those truths, an honest confession of sin, and a desire to live a changed life. This desire is fulfilled only with a strong commitment to learning and honouring God’s Word in daily life, since God’s thoughts and ways are different than ours, and what He requires does not come naturally to us (Isaiah 55:8-9). Steady obedience is impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit. He comes to meet us at the point of our desire to obey, to help us to be true Christ-followers, living in consistent submission. We may still not be perfect, but our lives will reflect a genuine desire to please God. We are constantly sowing and reaping with our thoughts, words and actions. As we sow to please God’s Spirit, we reap eternal life. If we sow to please ourselves, we reap destruction. May the Holy Spirit help us to have a love for His Word, to obey it and to reap life.

  • That we will have an overwhelming desire for God’s righteousness.
  • That God will reveal Himself through His Word to us, and to all who are searching for Him.
  • That Jesus will help us, as His followers, to keep depending on Him as we battle against sin.
  • That we will be strengthened and encouraged as we learn, honour and live by God’s Word.

I will declare that Jesus is Lord.

The title “Lord” is meant to convey power, authority, influence, and even the threat of danger if one doesn’t comply with the orders given by someone holding that title. God’s Word proclaims Jesus as Lord. What did Jesus’ example teach us about what that means? And do we declare it to those who’ve never heard it? The Book of John tells us that Jesus existed from the beginning of time, and that everything we see and know about life was made through Him and with Him present (John 1:1-3). Our personal knowledge of Jesus as Lord comes when we confess our need for Him and He reveals His power to change our hearts and lives through His life, death and resurrection (Romans 10:9). Yet with all His power, when He lived on earth in human form, He demonstrated humility and a desire to serve others—to embody patience, grace, and meeting others’ needs before His own (Mark 10:45). All with the purpose of pointing to the heart of the Father—to reconcile each person to Himself through His Son, whose character reflected His own perfectly (John 1:14). Many people today are unaware of Jesus’ power as God’s Son, or of His power to change their lives. Commit to declaring what you know about Jesus—that He is Lord. Not merely a powerful earthly figure, a good man or a prophet, but the Creator and Sustainer of heaven and earth, and the One through whom we gain forgiveness of sins, peace with God the Father, and true purpose for our lives, now and for eternity.

  • That we will be given the courage to declare what we know about Jesus to others.
  • That the Holy Spirit will soften the hearts of those with whom we share this truth.

I will pass on my faith intergenerationally.

What are your earliest memories of learning about God or about what Jesus did for you? Did you have mentors who helped you to grow in your faith once you first put your trust in Christ? Do you now have someone who knows they can come to you when they are looking for spiritual advice? Being disciples who make disciples means that as we live with a conscious desire to follow Christ and imitate His life, we help others to do the same. We share with them what God has revealed to us as we walk with Him by faith. No matter our age, we can tell others what God has done for us, and influence them towards a deeper understanding of God’s character and greater confidence in His Word. There is always some truth that we can pass on by word or example to someone who is paying attention to what we do or say. It can be a neighbour, a friend or a member of our own family. Often the person is someone younger than we are, but they can also simply be younger or less experienced in their faith journey. Ask God to help you be sensitive to opportunities to pass on your faith, especially to someone who may be younger or less experienced than you are.

  • That God will show us opportunities for being a mentor in the faith.
  • That God will grant us the courage and wisdom we need to share what we have learned with others in the right ways and at the right times.
  • That those with whom we share our faith will become Christ-followers or deepen their friendship with Him.
  • That those we disciple will also become people who make other disciples.

I will walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who is present and active in our hearts, our lives and in the world, but who can tend to be the least acknowledged. We need the Holy Spirit’s power to live out the meaningful and fruitful life in Christ we’re called to have once we commit to Him. When we give our lives to Christ, His desire is to have His Spirit come upon us in a powerful way, so that we have a deep sense of His love and presence, a deeper understanding of His Word, and sensitivity to His promptings. We’re empowered to serve in meaningful ways that advance the message of the gospel wherever we live, study or work. Special gifts are given to each person (1 Corinthians 12:8-10), which, in combination with the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), result in the gospel being spread through our lives and example as we operate in them. Our hearts are sensitive to the Father’s desire to reach people without the forgiveness, peace and hope found in Christ, and we are burdened with the spiritual needs of those around us and throughout the world. We have the motivation and help we need to love others the way Christ loved us, even when it’s difficult. We have the courage we need to live counter-culturally, taking Spirit-led risks so that Jesus is reflected and made known. We’re able to withstand the criticism that may come with taking an unpopular stand that honours God, because of an abiding sense of His love and protection. And we can always ask God for more of His Spirit so that we can experience all of this, and much more.

  • That God will grant us a time of refreshing in experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • That God will help us to understand more about how He has gifted us and how He desires to use those gifts through our lives.
  • That the fruit of the Holy Spirit will become increasingly evident in our personal lives.
  • That our eyes will be opened to new opportunities for serving and sharing our faith, and we would have the courage to pursue them.

I will reflect Christ everywhere I go.

It’s not hard to encounter pleasant people as we go about our day-to-day activities. It’s good for us to be agreeable, approachable, and even kind to people we meet as we work, study, run errands, or take care of our day-to-day responsibilities. But for Christ-followers, what God desires goes much further. His desire is that the fruit of the Holy Spirit be at work and evident in our lives at moments and in places where others might least expect it. He wants to transform us so that love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control are demonstrated in extraordinary measure, in a way that makes others curious about our background or our motivation. Either of these, when explained, should point to Christ.

Our ability to reflect Christ consistently is directly related to our time investment in our relationship with Him. As we spend time praying, reading the Bible, and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform our thinking and behaviour through honest confession of sin, and through accountable relationships with other Christ-followers, we are changed in a way that impacts those we have relationship with. As believers, our presence brings the light of Christ to the world, chasing darkness just as He promised it would (Matthew 5:14). We can speak the words of truth, wisdom and encouragement that those still in darkness need to hear. As we’re led, we can come alongside people who need a sacrificial investment of our time and understanding, so they can experience Christ as their Saviour and friend, too. Our relationship with Christ is meant to be so vibrant that it spills outward and changes our world.

  • That our desire to be closer to Christ would increase, and we would spend more time in His presence through interactive prayer and Bible study.
  • That the fruit of the Holy Spirit will continue to grow in our lives—love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.
  • That we would depend on the Holy Spirit and not on ourselves to reflect Christ wherever we go.
  • That we would be sensitive to opportunities to demonstrate His character and kindness when it is needed.

AUGUST 2019

I will share Christ’s power with others.

Many people have an intellectual understanding of who Christ is, but haven’t experienced His power. Others have allowed the fire of their love for Him to die down so much that there is little motivation to share what they know about Him with people who need to hear it most. One encouraging truth that can inspire us wherever we are on our faith journey is that even a little faith means a lot (Matthew 17:20-21). If we intentionally ask and then trust God to help us through a difficult circumstance, He will (Hebrews 4:16). If we pray for a specific need to be met, He will provide (Matthew 7:7). When we ask Him to reveal Himself to us by the power of the Holy Spirit, He does (John 14:23, Luke 24:49). If we feel we are lacking in faith or in strength, and we call out to Him for more, He will respond (Mark 9:23-24).

When we first give our lives to Christ and we experience a change of heart and a new sense of direction, joy and purpose, we are stirred to share what He has done for us with others. As time goes on and we see specific answers to our prayers, our faith grows, and we have the courage to pray for other people’s needs when they may be lacking faith themselves. Even in a time of disappointment with God’s sovereignty in a given situation, His presence and peace can still become a testimony we can share with others. People without hope also need to know that He can grant the same grace to them in a time of disorientation or pain. With any need we encounter, we have the authority in Christ to pray, speak life, or bring healing and transformation through our prayers, our words and our actions. Let’s not shy away from the opportunities we are given.

  • That we will maintain an attitude of gratitude for what Christ has already done for us through His life, death and resurrection.
  • That our own experience of Christ’s power will be deepened or renewed in a way that will give us the desire to share it.
  • That we will have discernment to recognize what God is doing in a person or a community and the courage to join Him in it as we have opportunity.

I will love God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength.

So much of God’s creation, and about life itself, points to the beauty of God’s character and His heart for everything He has made. As the pinnacle of His creation, His original plan was that we would enjoy relationship with Him as our highest priority and our greatest source of satisfaction. But beginning with Adam and Eve, who sinned in the Garden of Eden, human beings’ highest desires tend to focus on life’s gifts rather than on God Himself. We’re primarily focused on earthly goals of survival or success, on pursuing earthly pleasures, or on working through earthly problems on our own. When we recognize a need to respond to God, we usually try to engage Him on our own terms.

Our lives cannot truly please God until we’re fully committed to living for His Son, Jesus. When we accept His offer of forgiveness, we are given new hearts, a new life, and sensitivity to His Spirit, who leads us into an ever-deepening relationship with the Father as we consistently follow His promptings. Without an intentional, daily effort to focus on our love relationship with God, everyday priorities constantly pull at our attention and time—and we starve spiritually (Matthew 4:4). It may be imperceptible at first, but eventually the distance will be evident in our thinking and life choices, which will more closely match society’s patterns than God’s Word. Our ability to hear His still, small voice wanes. Discouragement can much more easily set in, and the risk of walking away from God increases.

Daily time with God in prayer, Bible reading and reflection, and obedience to what we learn and hear, helps us to stay close to the Lord. We are better able to resist temptation, recognize distractions, and live more effectively for His purposes. In the end, we remain positioned to live out His intended plan for us.

Ask and it will be granted…

  • That we will remain focused on loving God as our highest priority in life.
  • That we will make a consistent, daily effort to spend time at Jesus’ feet, and in His Word.
  • That we will allow God to shape and lead our choices every day, so that we live out His intended purposes for us.

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.

‘People do not live by bread alone,

I will choose to be thankful.

No two people who have ever lived have experienced an identical life journey. There may be some general similarities, but the intricate details are always unique. Because of original sin, our lives in a fallen world are often characterized by struggle. The struggle may be as a result of the consequences of our own choices, or a result of circumstances beyond our control.

In broad terms, depending on where we were born or the details of our environments, we may have enjoyed a life of relative peace, never having known civil war or what it was like to flee as a refugee to a strange country with only the clothes on our backs. We may have grown up in economic security, never being concerned about where our next meal would come from, where we would sleep, or if we could afford to keep the heat and lights on in our homes. We may not have had to contend with cyclical, devastating weather patterns that continually threatened our very way of life, and from which we could never escape by simply moving to a safer place. All of us at one time or another will face the loss of a loved one, illness, family strife, or the distressing results of the choices of another human being who is still captive to his or her sinful nature, unchanged by God’s grace.

As Christ-followers, the struggle goes even deeper—we don’t just face earthly challenges and obstacles, but literal forces of evil seeking to demolish our faith in God’s goodness (Ephesians 6:12) and our confidence that He sees us, and hears and answers prayer (Hebrews 11:6). It can be hard to see any good in our situation. But the Bible encourages us to be thankful at all times (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Gratitude journals have become popular in both Christian and non-Christian circles, but our motivation for maintaining an attitude of gratitude should go deeper than merely trying to feel better about what may be happening at any given moment. Why? Because there is a danger in allowing earthly troubles to crowd out the good seed that has been planted in our lives (Matthew 13:22). Our prayers will begin to lack fervour and expectancy. And we lose the strength we can gain by remembering that God is working all things together for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28). Jesus warns us that after a while we can be so overcome by worry and disappointment that we forget the grace shown to us by His death on the cross and stop following Him completely.

As we move through life, there is always a much bigger and more beautiful picture taking shape than our earthly eyes can see. Whether you see the result in this life or have to wait until the next, the Bible urges us to place our confidence in what is unseen, since it is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). We need God’s grace to remain thankful both for what He has already done and for what He is about to do, now and throughout eternity. This is a counter-cultural posture that we can only take consistently with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Not only will we be encouraged as we walk through difficulty, but those in despair, needing hope, can be encouraged by the faith and gratitude we display in the midst of any of our challenges.

Ask and it will be granted…

  • That our eyes will continually be opened to God’s handiwork in our lives and circumstances.
  • That the Holy Spirit will help us to remain thankful and full of praise in all seasons.
  • That the Holy Spirit will help us to be faithful in bringing our requests to the Father, with thanksgiving, so that we may have the peace He promises.

  • How would others describe your faith during this season? Can they tell that you are thankful, joyful or hopeful? Why or why not?
  • In what ways can you increase your level of gratitude if you have felt more frustrated than thankful lately?

NOVEMBER 2019

I will give of myself even though it costs me something.

As we walk with Christ, studying and obeying His Word and remaining sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, our understanding is deepened over time of how much it cost Jesus to reconcile us to His Father. Having laid our old lives down and seeking to live new lives for Him, the Holy Spirit also motivates us to share more of ourselves for the sake of the kingdom, so that others may also be strengthened in their faith or welcomed into His family for the first time.

Sharing, volunteering, and making small sacrifices for others are generally seen as honourable in our society, but Christ-followers are called to a more radical level of obedience for the sake of those who are still living without light and truth. God has prepared good works in advance for each of us to do (Ephesians 2:10), and He introduces tailor-made opportunities for each of us to serve as we walk with Him. Sometimes those works come naturally and are easy for us to fulfil, and at other times, they require a new level of faith, self-denial and encouragement by the Spirit for us to proceed. Sometimes the sacrifice or course of action we feel led to take may even seem foolish, reckless or irresponsible by everyday, earthly norms—not easily understood by those who are not generally pursuing passionate kingdom purpose. But if we’re not careful, we can miss tremendous opportunities for witness and impact if we hesitate at the cost or risk associated with the occasions for serving that God presents.

As beneficiaries of Christ’s sacrifice, our gratitude and love for Him should spark a desire to respond no matter what it costs us to follow His direction. As we grow in confidence in our relationship with God, we can be sure of His leading into special opportunities to love and serve others, in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are promised that as we refresh others, we will also be refreshed (Proverbs 11:25), and that as we invest in the kingdom, we will receive much more in return (John 4:35-36).

Ask and it will be granted…

  • That we will become more sensitive to the ways God is asking us to reach those around us with the gospel.
  • That we will be willing to follow the Holy Spirit into whatever opportunities for service He presents.
  • That we will be strengthened and encouraged to do God’s will each day.
  • That we will not grow weary in well-doing.

  • Do you feel that your daily, weekly or monthly schedule is a reflection of God’s desire for the use of your time in kingdom service? Why or why not?
  • Do you have a desire to serve others in a way that may seem strange or unconventional? Ask God to show you if that desire originates with Him or with you.
  • Do you feel that you spend enough time in prayer or in the Word to discern what your next steps should be?

DECEMBER 2019

I will watch and be ready for Jesus’ return.

If you suddenly learned that you had one year left to live, what would you want to change in terms of how you spend your time, hour by hour, or day by day? What if you knew you just had seven days left? How would you spend them? What tasks or activities would suddenly take on a higher priority or a new sense of urgency?

As Christ-followers, God’s desire for us is that we live with the understanding that our time on earth will pass by quickly, and we should spend it preparing for eternity with Him (Psalm 90:12). Ultimately, His highest purpose for us is to know Him more and more deeply. Then we can introduce Him to others as we ourselves grow in our understanding of who He is. All of our lives—our work, our play, our joy, our pain—all of it can be considered worship as we commit ourselves to living for God’s honour and Christ’s purposes. A disruption to our expected life span should not necessarily change how we’re living from day to day, if we’re living with Jesus as the centre of our thoughts, decisions, and overall outlook on life (Matthew 25:1-13).

This December, and as we prepare for a new year, we can refocus on what’s most important if we’ve found ourselves distracted. All of creation eagerly awaits the fulfilment of God’s ultimate plan for the world—to reveal Jesus as the King of all kings, the absolute Ruler of the universe, and to show those who truly belong to Him (Romans 8:19). In spite of our challenges and temptations, with the Holy Spirit’s help, we can live with these truths in mind day by day, allowing them to shape our hearts and lives, and proving God’s Word to be fruitful in our lives (Mark 4:20). Then we can be confident that we’re prepared for the joy of meeting Him face to face, whether we’re called home personally, or whether He returns for His church.

Ask and it will be granted…

  • That we will not be weighed down or distracted from our focus on Jesus by temptations, the cares of this world, or earthly ambitions.
  • That we will deepen our commitment to reading and honouring God’s Word.
  • That we will be strengthened by the Holy Spirit’s power day by day.
  • That we will have more courage to share our knowledge of Christ and the need to prepare for His return with others.

  • Do you think about the second coming of Christ? What thoughts come to mind if or when you do?
  • What might you change about your general routine to be more prepared if it wasn’t too much of a struggle?
  • Have you asked God to help you reorient your life in this way, if the change you desire does seem to be too difficult?

January 2018 – Spiritual Vitality – Read, Pray

Key Everyday Thought:

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit His soul? (Mark 8:36).

Time is a precious gift. We each have 24 hours on any given day, but at any moment, the complete picture of the length of our lifetime is always unknown. God’s primary purpose for us is relationship with Him, but He can easily be crowded out of all the plans and activities tugging at our hearts for our time and attention. Only with His help, strength and direction can we use each hour and each day we’ve been given to the best of our ability, and for Christ’s honour. You are unique, and God’s plan for your life is like no one else’s. Each day this month, invite the Lord to quiet your heart and to absorb His Word, long enough for Him to align your activities and your life to His best plans for you.

Ask and it will be granted…
– That we will each have a deepened sense of the brevity of life
– That God will increase our love for Him
– That we will learn how to wait patiently on God’s timing
– That we will trust God with our difficult situations

February – Missional Vitality – Share

Key Everyday Thought:

No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us (1 John 4:12).

God is love. Broken relationships, tension and division regularly remind us that we live in a fallen world, far different from what our Creator had in mind when life first began. But as we turn to our Father through faith in Christ, and allow Him to make us more like Jesus, His heart for forgiveness, understanding and unity in community become more evident in our lives. In turn, our love for God, family, friends, strangers, and even enemies, helps a fallen world see evidence of God’s beauty and power in even the most unpleasant situations. This month, let’s ask the Lord to help us see each other as made in His image, and lean on Him to express His generous grace and love to each person He places in our lives. With His help, we can learn to love our neighbour as we love ourselves, and move closer to the unity we crave in our families, churches and communities.

– That we will understand more what it means to be made in God’s image
– That God will help us to be patient with others as He is patient with us

March – Theological Vitality – Read, Share

Key Everyday Thought:

Jesus is the resurrection and the life, and anyone who believes in Him will live, even after dying (John 11:25).

The message of the gospel is called good news because it applies to everyone, whatever their age, background or circumstances. Every Easter, our churches welcome many people who may only visit once or twice a year. Some may never have been to church at all. They may be living out a season of great joy and contentment in their life journey, or they may be experiencing tremendous turmoil. We have this message of hope to offer each one who comes—that there is life beyond what we are experiencing now, and that when we put our faith in Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, we can experience true freedom—peace with God, and life after death, for eternity. As we approach yet another Easter celebration, let’s ask God to deepen our own appreciation each day for the life-changing message we have already heard and accepted, and for the boldness to share it with others as we are given opportunities.

April – Spiritual Vitality – Pray, Share

Key Everyday Thought:

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it (Proverbs 22:6).

Studies show that children between the ages of 4 and 14 are the most open to accepting Christ. If they do trust in Him at this stage, they are likely to remain committed for life. But there are so many destructive influences competing for their attention—at increasingly earlier ages. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s eternal Word still holds true. He reminds us that, even in these times, His love for children and His desire to see them learn His ways has not changed. His Spirit still pursues their hearts and His power and wisdom are still available to us to guide them into His best plans and purposes for their lives. He wants us to share His love with them, so that they learn early on that He desires to be their guide throughout their lifetimes. Let’s trust God together for both the eternal security of our children, and for His provision in our lives as parents, guardians and mentors to provide the acceptance, care, protection and godly counsel that they need.

Ask and it will be granted…
– That children throughout Canada will be viewed as the treasure they are
– That many will receive Christ at an early age and serve Him for life
– That they will be cared for and mentored by godly adults
– That they will be thoroughly exposed to God’s Word

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns (Philippians 1:6).

This month, our leaders will gather in Victoria, B.C., for our General Conference 2018, where we will launch centenary celebrations to honour God’s faithfulness to our Fellowship over the last 100 years. On an individual level, the Christian journey often begins full of joy and faith, and with plentiful stories of God’s miraculous intervention and provision. But often, over time, obstacles come which can bring disappointment, fatigue, or even bitterness and the temptation to abandon one’s faith in God’s plans and promises. Similarly, we can trace God’s mighty hand at work from the inception of our Fellowship right to the present time. Though difficulties in our society are on the increase, let’s pray this month that God will give us all continued vision and strength for His purposes in our lives, and for continued Spirit empowerment for the work He still wants to accomplish in the world through our Fellowship.

Ask and it will be granted…
– That we would maintain hearts of gratitude for all God has already done
– That we would recognize and overcome spiritual obstacles to growth
– That our leaders and congregations would be people of prayer

Key Everyday Thought:

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.” (John 8:31).

Many Canadians have never heard a clear explanation of the gospel. A wide range of faith options are available to those seeking greater spiritual meaning in their lives. Well-meaning Christians, in a desire to connect with others, can be tempted to compromise their understanding of Scripture in order to remain approachable and open to relationships with others. While the Bible encourages us to love and help others, it upholds Christ as being the sole source of salvation and the only key to a satisfying life. It has become even more important for Christ-followers to become grounded in God’s Word while cultivating a heart of love for God and for those with whom we have regular interactions. By building a strong foundation in our own spiritual lives, we are then able to be used by God’s Spirit to help bring others to faith in Christ.

Ask and it will be granted…

What joy for the nation whose God is the LORD, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance (Psalm 33:12).

The Bible reveals God as the Creator of the universe who loves the nations and all its people—so we know that He is passionate about Canada. God’s desire is that the nations acknowledge Him and experience eternal and purposeful life in Him through faith in Christ. As the leaders of a nation honour God in their lives and decisions, He uses them as a conduit for blessings which all their citizens ultimately enjoy. His desire is that each citizen in each nation be provided for in every way—to know that their lives are valuable and that they can experience a life of safety, provision, purpose and peace. While this is not always possible in a world corrupted by sin and the unseen forces of evil, it is what He has asked His children, with His help, to continuously work towards. Let’s place Canada’s future in God’s hands and trust Him to help our leaders to consider how their decisions will impact generations to come.

August – Spiritual Vitality – Pray

Key Everyday Thought:

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength (Isaiah 40:31a).

Depending on where you live and your life circumstances, rest and relaxation can be difficult to set aside time for. Yet our minds and bodies were not designed for never-ending use—regular time out to slow down is needed for healthy and productive living. Without an appropriate rhythm for recharging our spirits and renewing our strength, our efficiency and sense of purpose and direction is likely to falter. We regularly need to be reminded that putting God first and spending intentional blocks of time focusing on His presence and His Word will keep us encouraged, help us maintain healthy spirits, and give us the courage we need to face difficult situations. A special time out annually for a vacation, retreat, or a change of environment, whether during the summer or at some other point of the year, can also give us a renewed appreciation for the work to which God has called us. If you are feeling burned out, turn to God and allow Him to restore you—no one who comes to Him will be turned away.

Ask and it will be granted…

Key Everyday Thought:

Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity (1 Timothy 4:12b).

College and university life can represent so many things to a young person—a chance to meet new friends, develop a social life, and be exposed to a lot of exciting information in preparation for a meaningful career. For others, it can represent a time of anxiety, feelings of isolation and uncertainty about the future, and for Christian students, the temptation to abandon trust in Jesus. God wants each one to know that He loves them, created them with a specific purpose in mind, cares about their situation now, and has plans for their future. Pray for each one to be awakened to their need for God and the salvation that is offered to them through Christ. Pray that they would reach out to Him when they face difficulties, and that they would experience the deliverance He offers. Pray that our campus outreaches and ministries would see continued growth and favour so that Canada’s two million post-secondary students will have a gospel witness wherever they are attending classes.

Key Everyday Thought:

Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon (Isaiah 58:10).

God’s concern for the poor, the hungry, the marginalized and the oppressed emerges consistently and prominently throughout the Scriptures. He reveals both righteousness and justice as intimately connected dimensions of His character, and asks those who belong to Him to develop character that equally expresses these attributes as well. As we take steps of faith to honour God’s desire, He helps us, and the impact is multiplied. When we take notice and share our resources with those who are struggling to survive, not only is our generosity a gift of hope to someone who may be in despair, but God’s loving nature is revealed and a pathway to Christ’s presence and the truth of the gospel is opened. When we interrupt oppressive practices through advocacy or support for those most harmed, we open the way for the kingdom of God to advance here on earth, shaping earthly life to more closely resemble what God intended it to be. While not everyone who receives our help may hear or accept Jesus’ message, let’s pray that His glory is revealed in our efforts.

November – Missional Vitality – Pray

Key Everyday Thought:

God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs (Matthew 5:10).

When we put our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us new hearts and begins to change the way we think. Our sensitivity to wrong-doing increases, and we are no longer able to feel comfortable actively engaging in thoughts, speech or activities that we come to understand causes pain to the Holy Spirit or diminishes His active communication to us. Jesus warns us that we can expect rejection, and even hatred, for putting our faith in Him and living in alignment with His commands. In some countries, believers can anticipate punishment for turning away from accepted patterns and practices in the society where they live, especially those which explicitly reject Christ’s claim to be the Son of God. This month, let’s pray that God will strengthen Christians living in countries where we can still live out our faith freely, helping us to choose obedience in spite of opposition, intimidation, peer pressure or rejection. Let’s also pray for God to deliver those who are suffering severely for their faith, that God will help them to stand firm in Christ, forgiving and praying for those who hurt them.

– That Christians worldwide will stand firm and faithful to God’s Word
– That those suffering for their faith will keep their eyes on Christ
– That God will deliver those who live in fear of death

Key Everyday Thought:

…the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means “God is with us”) (Isaiah 7:14).

We often take for granted that everyone around us has heard the real story behind Christmas celebrations. Earthly traditions—beautifully decorated Christmas trees, the excitement of buying presents for family and friends, spending time with some of our favourite people, and preparing and consuming tasty holiday food and drinks—can all crowd out our focus on the birth of Christ, the central purpose of the season. Many Canadians, in fact, have never heard the biblical account of God sending His Son in the human form of a baby, born of Mary, a virgin, to grow up and willingly offer His own life on a cross as a sacrifice for the sins of the entire world. In obedience to His Father, Jesus took on the guilt of our sins, accepting its punishment, death, so that each person who puts their faith in Him could be forgiven and declared to be in right standing with God. By putting our faith in Christ for forgiveness, we are each given the free gift of eternal life. Let’s constantly remember and share with others the real reason we celebrate the wonder of Christ’s birth.

For a strengthened sense of unity and community

  • That our relationships will honour the unity demonstrated by the Trinity—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • That our families, neighbourhoods and churches will experience and reflect Christlike community marked by grace, mutual understanding, forgiveness and generosity.
  • That we will be intentional in seeking to integrate and unite all members of our various communities in fellowship and worship.
  • That we would recognize barriers to genuine unity and seek God’s power to overcome them.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Acts 4:32-37

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Galatians 3:26-28

For many lives to be transformed by the gospel this Easter

  • That God will open up many opportunities for Christians to share the gospel and the significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and that many hearts will receive the Lord for the first time.
  • That the true significance of Christ’s life, death and resurrection will be deepened in the hearts of those with lukewarm or wavering faith.
  • That God will prepare our faith communities to receive and engage all who are seeking a sense of belonging and hope for themselves and their loved ones.
  • That truth will be communicated with grace and love to those seeking practical and biblical wisdom for their personal circumstances.

Ephesians 1:18-20

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,  and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Ezekiel 34:11-16

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep.   • That believers of all ages throughout our Fellowship will relate meaningfully with brothers and sisters in Christ across generations.

  • That God will help families to strengthen their marriages and family relationships, and to rebuild connections that have been broken.

  • That our leaders and ministers will hunger for God’s presence and the Spirit’s work, gifts and expressions.
  • That they would walk in companionship with the Spirit and be open to all that Jesus promised the Spirit would provide.
  • For congregations to be increasingly filled with anticipation for the Spirit to reveal Himself and transform lives each time the family of God meets.
  • That God will increase our understanding of our need for continual dependence on Him, and we will begin to consciously “practise His presence.”

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.

    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Ephesians 5:15-20

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. For Sabbath rest for the minds, bodies and spirits of both the strong and the weary

  • That believers everywhere will be consistent and intentional about building rest, reflection and unhurried time with God into our daily routines.
  • That we will become more intentional about protecting a time of weekly rest and worship.
  • That we will value our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to help us be good stewards of what He has given us, both spiritually and in practical ways, such as healthy eating and regular exercise.
  • That we will take the time to reflect on God’s work in our lives and in the world around us, and to listen to what He has in mind to do next.

  • That we would increase in our understanding as a Pentecostal family of what it means to be one in mission together, demonstrating God’s love for humanity.

  • That men, women and children throughout our Fellowship will have continued sharpened sensitivity and a meaningful response to both the spiritual and practical needs of those less fortunate, oppressed, and vulnerable in Canada and around the world.

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

1 Peter 2:9-12

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Romans 12:3-8

For God’s help, strength and deliverance for persecuted Christians

  • That God will strengthen, deliver and protect Christians being oppressed or attacked for their faith.
  • That the gospel will continue to spread in spite of opposition, and that even the hearts of persecutors will be changed.
  • For the restoration of homes and resources for those who have suffered loss as a result of discrimination or violence.
  • For refugees around the world to be integrated successfully into their countries of refuge, and especially for those being resettled to Canada through PAOC’s sponsorship agreement with the Canadian government.
  • That Christians everywhere will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be strong in the face of opposition and will share and live out their faith without fear.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

Romans 12:17-21

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. For the true meaning of Christmas to be celebrated and declared

 

  • That God’s Spirit will lead Christians to learn more about the season of advent and to embrace its full meaning.
  • That we will be responsive to opportunities to share the truth about Christ and the meaning of advent with our neighbours, friends and families.
  • That our churches will be effective in sharing the message of Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection, so that many hearts and lives will be changed this Christmas.
  • That we will recognize thoughtful ways to express God’s love to those without hope during this season and always.

PASSAGES TO PONDER:

Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Luke 2:1-20

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

  • That our relationships will honour the unity demonstrated by the Trinity—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Acts 4:32-37

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Galatians 3:26-28

  • That God will open up many opportunities for Christians to share the gospel and the significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and that many hearts will receive the Lord for the first time.

For authentic, passionate Pentecostal leadership and congregations

  • That our leaders and ministers will hunger for God’s presence and the Spirit’s work, gifts and expressions.
  • That they would walk in companionship with the Spirit and be open to all that Jesus promised the Spirit would provide.
  • For congregations to be increasingly filled with anticipation for the Spirit to reveal Himself and transform lives each time the family of God meets.
  • That God will increase our understanding of our need for continual dependence on Him, and we will begin to consciously “practise His presence.”

Luke 4:14-21

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me

to set the oppressed free,

Ephesians 5:15-20

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • That we will value our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to help us be good stewards of what He has given us, both spiritually and in practical ways, such as healthy eating and regular exercise.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. For God’s help, strength and deliverance for persecuted Christians

  • That God will strengthen, deliver and protect Christians being oppressed or attacked for their faith.
  • That the gospel will continue to spread in spite of opposition, and that even the hearts of persecutors will be changed.
  • For the restoration of homes and resources for those who have suffered loss as a result of discrimination or violence.
  • That Christians everywhere will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be strong in the face of opposition and will share and live out their faith without fear.

For the true meaning of Christmas to be celebrated and declared

  • That God’s Spirit will lead Christians to learn more about the season of advent and to embrace its full meaning.
  • That we will be responsive to opportunities to share the truth about Christ and the meaning of advent with our neighbours, friends and families.
  • That our churches will be effective in sharing the message of Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection, so that many hearts and lives will be changed this Christmas.
  • That we will recognize thoughtful ways to express God’s love to those without hope during this season and always.

PASSAGES TO PONDER:

Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Luke 2:1-20

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)  And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

JANUARY 2015 (Spiritual Vitality)


Because faith and love dispel fear…

  • Pray that this year we will each enter into a deeper love relationship with Christ that is vibrant, authentic and transformative.
  • Pray that we will be strengthened by the power of God’s Word, and have our minds and lives renewed by its truths.
  • Pray that we will regularly invest the time that is needed to connect with God through Bible reading, prayer, listening and meditation.
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit will quicken our love for God so much that we naturally have the need and desire to share this special relationship with others.

FEBRUARY 2015 (Missional Vitality) 

Because Christ’s love changes lives… 

  • Pray for our hearts to be softened towards one another, so that we can give and receive forgiveness readily within our families, churches and communities.
  • Pray that God will help us to seek ways to bring reconciliation where there is estrangement, restoration where there is brokenness, and comfort where there is mourning.
  • Pray that God will present opportunities for the message of Christ’s love and forgiveness to be shared in all of our relationships in word and deed.

Because the Word of God stands forever…

  • Pray that Christians will make it a life-long pursuit to develop a complete understanding of all of the Scriptures and how they apply to life in Christ individually, corporately, and in modern-day times.
  • Pray that we will each take the time to read God’s Word every day and that our understanding of God’s mind and heart will be opened.
  • Pray that pastors and church leaders everywhere will be diligent and faithful in imparting God’s truths to their congregations in word and deed.
  • As we celebrate Palm Sunday this month, pray that we will grow in our Scriptural understanding of the significance of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, and his subsequent suffering, crucifixion and resurrection.

  • Pray that our understanding of the truth of Christ’s life, death and resurrection will be deepened.
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit will help us to regularly bring all of our circumstances to the Lord in prayer.
  • Pray that we would have the courage to continue standing in faith, trusting God with all that we have committed to Him in prayer.
  • Pray that we will be strengthened spiritually so that God can use us to bring hope this Easter and beyond to many who have not been reconciled to Him—men, women and especially children.

Because we need the power of the Holy Spirit…

  • Pray that the meaning of Pentecost—the outpouring of the Holy Spirit after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension—will become real for many Christians this month.
  • Pray that many will experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit for the first time and that many will experience a time of spiritual refreshing from the Lord.
  • Pray that believers will have the courage to go wherever God calls them to spread the gospel and to serve as tangible expressions of His love.
  • Pray that Christian ministries everywhere will be effective in bringing many people to faith in Christ.
  • Pray that our churches, pastors, Mission Canada and global workers will continue to find favour wherever they serve.

  • Luke 24:49 “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

  • Pray that believers will have an increasing hunger and thirst for God’s Word and truth, and that their faith, understanding and wisdom would increase.
  • Pray that sound biblical teaching and resources will be available for all who seek them.
  • Pray that believers everywhere will have access to effective discipleship, so they will be able to persevere in their faith through testing, trials and temptations.
  • Pray that people professing faith in Christ will be strengthened in their ability to discern between true and false teaching.

  • Pray that God will continue to bless Canada and turn the hearts of men, women and children towards faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

  • Pray that they will continue to increase in number and impact wherever they are placed.
  • Pray that God will make our humanitarian efforts effective in helping people in desperate physical and spiritual need.

  • Pray that this summer believers will make rest and spending time with God a priority.
  • Pray that we will be strengthened and renewed so that we can continue to do our work effectively, whatever God has called us to do.
  • Pray that we will make pleasing the Holy Spirit a priority and that the fruit of the Holy Spirit will be evident in our lives.
  • Pray that God’s presence in our lives and our faith in Christ will be infectious wherever we live, work, or go.

  • Isaiah 30:15a “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…”

  • Pray for the effectiveness of university campus ministries all across Canada.
  • Pray for the hearts and minds of university and college students across Canada to be transformed by God’s Word and by the Holy Spirit.
  • Pray for young people who commit to Christ to be discipled well and to have access to sound biblical doctrine and teaching.
  • Pray for students in our Bible colleges, that they will develop a strong foundation for their faith and ministries in the years to come.

  • Pray that we would have the boldness to confront injustice and inequality in our world.

  • Pray for the restoration of homes and resources for those who have suffered loss as a result of discrimination or attack.
  • Pray that Christians everywhere will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be strong in the face of opposition and to share and live out their faith without fear.

A PRAYER FOR … Renewal

Father,

Thank You for Your invitation to an eternal relationship with You through faith in Your Son, Jesus. Help me to continually deepen that relationship through the consistent and thorough study of Your Word.

Help me to become more grounded in it so that my faith is renewed this year, and so that I am strengthened by Your Spirit to face all that comes my way.

Help me to make spending time with You this year my highest priority, and help me to hear Your voice more clearly from day to day.

Thank You for Your promise that as I hunger and thirst for Your righteousness, I will be filled, and that as I study and obey Your commands, I will find true freedom. Thank You for all the ways in which You will reveal Yourself to me this year, and for all the good things You have in store.

A PRAYER FOR … Sharing God’s Love

Father,

Thank You for the amazing, unconditional love You have demonstrated to us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still powerless and outside of Your will. May the love You have for us be continually poured out in our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, so that we can then pour it outward into our families and communities.

Help me and my church family to grow in understanding of how to live out loving relationships, so that our example will draw others who have yet to know Christ. Restore broken families, Lord, and bring comfort to all those who are mourning.

Show us how to bring hope to the hurting and how to make a tangible difference in their circumstances. Thank You for Your compassion, care and faithfulness in our lives, and that You are working all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

A PRAYER FOR … Preparing for Easter

Father,

Thank You for loving the world so much that You gave Your only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not be condemned, but will have eternal life. Increase our understanding of what Christ has done for us, so that our lives become an even greater reflection of the hope to which You have called us.

May You reveal Yourself to many people for the first time this Easter, so they understand that Jesus’ life, death and resurrection applies to each of us personally—that every person matters to You, and that every person can receive Christ by faith.

Help me and my church family to be willing to lay down our lives for others, just as Christ did for us, so that many people can come to know Christ. Help us to make You and Your kingdom our first priority, so that You can use our lives as You desire.

A PRAYER FOR … The Next Generation

Father,

Thank You for the tremendous blessing that all children represent in our lives. You have entrusted us with the responsibility of passing on our faith and Your Word to them, and we trust You to help us do this faithfully.

We pray especially for those between the ages of 4 and 14, who are most receptive to the gospel, that they will have many opportunities to hear it clearly explained. Lead them to respond by believing in Christ, confessing Him as Lord and Saviour.

Help them to believe and love Your Word as absolute truth, and to share their faith with boldness. Grant them the wisdom, courage and strength to resist temptations and anything that can draw their hearts and lives away from You, and to commit to Your plans for them completely.

Thank You for all You will accomplish through our children as they learn to live for You.

Father,

We face so many pressures, distractions and barriers in our day. But all things are possible when we put our trust in You. Please open the way for more families throughout Canada to seek, find and build biblical family values into their lives and homes, so they can be stronger and give more of themselves and their time for each other’s benefit and well-being.

Help believers everywhere to find common ground with their neighbours, so that there will be many opportunities to share the love and hope Christ offers. May you ignite a spirit of selfless service and generosity in our hearts so that our zeal is for the advancement of your kingdom.

A PRAYER FOR … Experiencing Pentecost

Father,

We desire our lives to be marked by the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. Come and revitalize our faith, so that we are empowered for witness to those who have yet to know Christ.

Help believers everywhere to learn more about the promise of the Father and to intentionally seek and receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Increase our understanding of the power of Pentecost for effective witness so that it becomes real in our faith communities across Canada and internationally.

Help us to see our nation as a mission field, and guide us in sharing our faith daily. Give us opportunities to speak Your Word boldly and to be Your hands and feet wherever we go.

A PRAYER FOR … Rest and Reflection

Father,

Thank You for being a constant presence in our lives—the only One who can give us lasting peace and renew our strength in a fast-paced, chaotic world. Remind believers everywhere of the importance of rest and reflection, and teach us how to be consistent and intentional about building rest, reflection and unhurried time with You into our daily routines.

Help us to recognize and resist unnecessary time pressures and distractions that can negatively impact our relationship with You and others. Increase our understanding and appreciation of the purpose of a Sabbath day, and help us to protect a time of weekly rest and worship.

Teach us how to value our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit—resting, eating healthy and exercising regularly—so that we can be good stewards of what You have given us and well prepared to live out Your plans and purposes for us.

We thank You for our leaders, and ask that You will grant them godly wisdom, strength and encouragement wherever they may be, and that You will use them for Your glory and purposes.

Increase their awareness of their need for Your presence and favour in everything they do. Help us as believers, both individually and corporately, to do our part to encourage and support those You have placed in government leadership.

And show us ways to support and encourage pastoral and ministry leaders in fulfilling the call You have placed on their lives. Help those You have called to ministry not to grow weary in doing good, but to persevere until You bring the promised rewards.

Father,

Thank You for the journey of faith that You’ve called us to. Help believers everywhere to heed Your call to be disciples who make disciples, intentionally helping each other to grow steadfast in our faith at all ages and stages of life, so that detours and pitfalls can be avoided along the way.

Help more youth and young adult believers entering university and college life to have opportunities for intentional discipleship, and to be a godly influence on those they meet on campus.

May You strengthen post-secondary students, protecting them from spiritual attack and temptation, and enabling them to share the Word boldly. Encourage and strengthen those called to lead campus ministries.

Grant our children, youth and young adults many opportunities to be influenced by godly parents and adults who will intentionally invest in their spiritual development through their lives and the example they set.

A PRAYER FOR … Those Less Fortunate

Father,

You have blessed us with an abundance of resources and relative freedom in our part of the world. Forgive us for relative apathy and insensitivity towards those who are much more vulnerable.

Increase our awareness of where needs exist and help us do all we can to care for the hungry, widows, orphans, the sick and the poor. Grant us greater courage to meet the needs of those we encounter who are most in need, and help believers everywhere to do everything possible to bring justice and relief to all who are oppressed and defenseless.

We ask for Your intervention in regions facing severe droughts and famines, and ask that You will make a way for sufficient food and water to reach those who need it most. Increase our gratitude for Your provision, protection and deliverance in our lives, and our desire to use it all for Your glory.

A PRAYER FOR … Persecuted Christians

Father,

Thank You for Your promise that You will be with us until the very end of this age. We pray for Your presence to comfort and encourage Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their faith, and that in spite of the darkness around them, the gospel will continue to spread and take root.

May You soften and change the hearts of those who are oppressing Your people, just as You did with the apostle Paul. We ask for a tremendous harvest of souls in every place where the gospel is being shared or lived out.

We pray for the eyes of people around persecuted believers to be opened, so that they will also begin to believe the gospel. Thank You that we can depend on You to help us and deliver us in times of trouble. Help us to keep looking to You to receive the help we need.

For believers to be reminded of the importance of rest and reflection

  • Pray that believers everywhere will be consistent and intentional about building rest, reflection and unhurried time with God into our daily routines.
  • Pray that we will be able to recognize and resist unnecessary time pressures and distractions that can negatively impact our relationship with God and others.
  • Pray that we will grow in our understanding and appreciation of the purpose of a Sabbath day and that we will become more intentional about protecting a time of weekly rest and worship.
  • Pray that we will value our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to help us be good stewards of what He has given us, both spiritually and in practical ways, such as healthy eating and regular exercise.
  • Pray that we will take the time to reflect on God’s work in our lives and in the world around us, and to listen to what He has in mind to do next.

PRAYER FOCUS 

For increased sensitivity and response to hunger and injustice in our world

  • Pray that believers will have an increased sense of God’s desire to care for the hungry and the vulnerable—widows, orphans, the sick and the poor.
  • Pray that we would have greater courage to meet the needs of those we encounter who are most in need, as God enables us.
  • Pray that more believers will be willing to do their part to bring about justice and relief for all who are oppressed and defenseless.
  • Pray that God will intervene in regions facing debilitating droughts and famines, and make a way for sufficient food and water to reach those who need it most.
  • Pray for hearts of increased gratitude to God for His provision, protection and deliverance in our lives.

Isaiah 58:6-12

Luke 4:18-19

Psalm 146:5-10

Psalm 9:7-18

PRAYER FOCUS

For those needing hope and the sense of Christ’s presence in times of trouble

  • Pray for God’s presence to comfort and encourage persecuted Christians around the world.
  • Pray that the gospel will continue to spread and take root in the communities and nations where the persecuted live, including in the hearts of those who are oppressing them.
  • Pray for a tremendous harvest of souls in every place where the gospel is being shared or lived out.
  • Pray for those mourning the loss or separation of loved ones through military service.
  • Pray for God’s comfort for surviving veterans and all who have experienced the painful memories of war and conflict.

PRAYER FOCUS

For many hearts to be opened to the true message and meaning of Christmas 

  • Pray for God to give men, women and children without Christ a desire to understand the true meaning behind Christmas, its traditions, and the reason for celebration.
  • Pray for believers to have boldness, creativity and many opportunities to share the true meaning of Christmas with those they encounter.
  • Pray that many will receive Christ into their hearts and lives for the first time this Christmas.
  • Pray for abundant opportunities and resources for believers to help meet the practical needs of those around them in the name of Christ.
  • Pray that this Christmas many hurting people will find comfort and true rest in the presence of Christ and will receive encouragement from His Word.
